  • An electric circuit breaker is a switching device that controls and protects the electrical power system either manually or automatically, from harm caused by overload or short circuit. Its primary function is to obstruct the current flow once the protective relays detect a fault.     Based on factors like the voltage, interrupting mechanism, or installation location, there are different types of circuit breakers. Depending upon the installation location, there are two types of circuit breakers.

    1. Outdoor Circuit breakers- Owing to their unique design, these circuit breakers can be used outdoors without a roof. With a sturdy exterior enclosure, these breakers can withstand wear and tear.
    2. Indoor circuit breakers- Designed with a metal-clad switchgear enclosure, these breakers are used inside the buildings or weather-resistant enclosures. Indoor circuit breakers typically function at a medium voltage.

    An example of a commonly used indoor circuit breaker is a vacuum circuit breaker in which the arc quenching occurs inside a vacuum medium that provides high insulating strength. Switching on and off current carrying contacts and interrelated interruption occurs in a vacuum chamber in the breaker called a vacuum interrupter. A superior dielectric medium is used in vacuum circuit breakers, the strength of which increases up to a thousand times by the interruption of the arc.

    There are multiple benefits of installing circuit breakers.
